Jan BIERMANN
Jan BIERMANN
Dr.-Ing. Jan Biermann, born in 1977 in northeastern Germany, began his professional path with a vocational training in banking before studying Mechanical Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). As a DAAD scholar, he spent an academic year at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he was honored as an Academic All Canadian. He completed his diploma in theoretical mechanical engineering at TUHH.
He subsequently pursued a PhD at the Institute for Modeling and Computation at TUHH, specializing in numerical acoustics. During this time, he also worked as a visiting researcher and DAAD scholar at the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech (USA), focusing on numerical iterative solvers for large-scale systems of equations. His doctoral thesis addressed efficient numerical procedures for large exterior acoustic problems.
In 2011, Jan joined BMW AG, where he initially became responsible for the acoustics of HVAC systems in complete vehicles. In this role, he introduced several innovative methods, including perception based psychoacoustic target setting, intensity based vibro-acoustic measurement techniques, and aero-acoustic computation based virtual product development. Since 2023, he has been part of BMW’s drivetrain development division, leading method development for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) simulations of electric drive units.
Alongside his engineering career, Jan completed a Master’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in 2022, with a meta philosophical thesis on value theory. Outside of his professional work, sports play a central role in his life. As a former semi professional volleyball player, he remains active as a senior national level beach volleyball competitor.
