Advanced Seminars

Discipline Seminars (1 PM - 5 PM on the 16th of June)

Seminar A - Structural Mechanics: Advanced Topics

The following topics are covered:

  • Becoming familiar with Abaqus solvers and to gain the latest performance kicks
Solver technology is a core component of every finite element method software. Over the past few years, we have developed new solvers in Abaqus, enabled SMP, DMP or hybrid parallelization and allowed to include GPU in many procedures. Due to the many implementations, it was often difficult to maintain an overview. This seminar is intended to develop an understanding of how to select the best possible solver for a given model. The advantages and disadvantages of the solvers should be highlighted. The seminar demonstrates parallelization capabilities. We will present performance studies of selected large-scale models. Proper employment of the right solver including the setting ensures accurate, efficient and scalable solutions tailored to different model characteristics.

  • Advanced Plastic injection molding on 3DEXPERIENCE platform
This training session explains an advanced workflow for simulating plastic injection molding on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The injection molding process is described in terms of the filling, packing and cooling phases, showing how manufacturing conditions influence the final behavior of the plastic part. Special attention is paid to the transfer of the process-related properties such as fiber orientations and weld lines to subsequent structural simulations. The training also covers the calibration of a suitable material model for fiber reinforced plastics using the 3DEXPERIENCE Material Calibration App. By combining calibrated material data with the results of the process simulation, a more realistic representation of the structural performance of plastic parts can be achieved.

Seminar D - Multibody System Simulation: Advanced Topics

This advanced seminar focuses on powertrain & drivetrain applications for SIMULIA Simpack. These span a broad range of industries, including, but not limited to, automotive, wind energy and general machinery.

  • Drivetrain model setup
In the first part it will be demonstrated how to set up a typical drivetrain model in Simpack. Best practises, common pitfalls and the most important force elements used to model gear pairs and rolling bearings will be discussed. Also some drivetrain related new features of recent Simpack releases will be presented.

  • EHD
Simpack's Elasto Hydrodynamic Bearing module (EHD) can be used for a large variety of conformal contacts including radial & axial journal bearings and lubricated, axial guidances. Following a deep dive into the theory, the setup of an EHD element in Simpack will be shown. Also, tips & tricks how to tweak performance & accuracy will be discussed.

  • e-Drive
Electromagnetic forces from e-machines have a large influence on powertrain dynamics, especially for NVH. These distributed and time dependent forces can be considered using the Electric Machine Interface of Simpack. It will be shown how to set up the interface and how to include additional effects using the coupling with CST Studio.
