Dr. Vanamala Madhusudana Rao, Outstanding Scientist/Scientist ‘H’ is currently serving as Project Director (LCA AF Mk2) in Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). He graduated from Sri Venkateswara University with distinction and completed ME in ‘Applied Electronics’ from Anna University, Guindy. He was awarded PhD in 2018 in Embedded systems in the area of ‘Optimization of Fault Tolerant System Architecture for increased Flight safety and Improved Performance’.
Starting his career in 1990 as a Scientist in ISRO Satellite Center (ISAC) / URSC, Bangalore, he gained rich experience while working on INSAT-2A and IRS-1C satellite projects in Control Systems Group. In 1993, he joined ADA and has contributed immensely in various capacities, in Avionics Systems, Digital Flight Control Systems of LCA and its variants, Integrated Flight Control System, etc. As Group Director (Flight Control Computers): Air Data Computer (ADC), LEVCON Air Data Computer and the Next Generation DFCC for LCA AF Mk2 has been developed. He also developed Flight Control System Sensors like ASA and RSA, FCS Sensors Lab with turn table. As Director (Tejas Co-ordination) at DRDO HQ, he interacted with Air HQ, Office of Raksha Mantri, Ministry of External Affairs, and replied to parliamentary queries on LCA programme.
As Project Director (LCA AF Mk2), he is responsible for complete Design and Development of the high performance Fighter Aircraft. Leading the programme, he has successfully completed the aircraft level PDR and CDR. Presently, realisation of the aircraft Structure and Development of aircraft systems are at advanced stage towards its maiden flight.
He has developed and established for the first time in the country Structural Coupling Test (SCT) facility to study structural modes interaction with FCS, Flight Data Recorder with Open System Architecture for onboard applications and Mil-Std-704D test facility. He has also developed indigenous MEMS based FCS inertial sensors, and a fully automated self learning architecture based 1st and 2nd line testers of IFCS for Air Force Squadrons. With his timely support for indigenous repair of Non-ToT Computer/ Subsytems, Air Force could recover many fighter trainer aircrafts (Hawks) from Aircraft on Ground (AOG) and made it operational. A large number of Avionics LRUs have been realized in cost effective manner and in record time, resulting in significant FE savings. A large number of aerospace industries are being nurtured in the country for Design and Development of LRUs / Systems for aerospace application, giving an impetus to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
He is a recipient of the Excellency Award in ADA/DRDO in 2001, Young Achiever of the year 2004 Award by Aeronautical society of India, DRDO AGNI Award-2012 for indigenous realization of LCA sub systems towards self-reliance, Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Gold Medal Award in 2019.
He has presented papers in various National and International conferences and has many publications in National and International Journals. He has National and International Patents in the area of Flight Controls and Avionics. He is a member / fellow of organizations such as IETE, IEEE, INCOSE and Life member of EMI/EMC Society of India, SRS (Sensor Research Society) of India, etc.
